Urdd Gobaith Cymru
The Urdd is a movement for children and young people. It organises a range of different activities across Wales. Sixteen development officers work all over Wales to deliver the Urdd's programme of activties. It has 300 local branches.
The Urdd was established in 1922 to give children and young people the chance to learn and socialise through the medium of Welsh, learning at the same time to respect each other and people around the world. It welcomes Welsh speakers and Welsh learners.
It organises:
- holidays
- weekly clubs
- competitions
- trips abroad
- trips to stay at the Urdd residential centres.
Many sorts of activities are offered at the residential centres, ranging from sailing, canoeing and climbing at Glan-llyn, to tobogganing, skiing, and horse-riding at Llangrannog. It also has a new residential centre at Cardiff Bay.
It organises sports activities, such as rugby, swimming, football, gymnastics, athletics and provides opportunities to compete against children and young people from all across Wales.
It runs weekly clubs and sports courses.
The Urdd Eisteddfod is Europe’s largest arts youth festival offering singing,dancing, acting, performing, art and design, and poetry competitions.
There are magazines for Welsh learners and fluent Welsh speakers.
It carries out humanitarian work. The Urdd has been anouncing the Message of Peace and Goodwill to the world since 1925. It offers young people the chance of travelling abroad with the Urdd to volunteer. It encourages young people to discover other cultures and meet children and young people from across the world.
