Aim
To generate an understanding of politics and stimulate an interest in the political process (and to vote when the opportunity arises!).
Activities
Day 1Presentations by various members of staff on the topics: politics and politicians in the UK political institutions - and the variation in powers between Westminster, the Welsh Assembly, and the Scottish Parliament.
Day 2
- A 'Question and Answer' session involving representatives from the four main parties (Conservatives, Labour, Liberal Democrats and Plaid Cymru), including the question 'Why should young people vote?'
- Presentation by a representative of the Electoral Commission
- Group discussion on the main topics of the day.
Follow-up work
(2 weeks)- Research one topic (e.g. the Euro/hunting)
- Ascertain the viewpoints of the political parties and the arguments for and against
- Write a pamphlet outlining the main viewpoints (the similarities and differences between the parties), and presenting an evaluation, which incorporates your own personal viewpoint
