Aim


To generate an understanding of politics and stimulate an interest in the political process (and to vote when the opportunity arises!).

Activities

Day 1
Presentations by various members of staff on the topics: politics and politicians in the UK political institutions - and the variation in powers between Westminster, the Welsh Assembly, and the Scottish Parliament.

Day 2

  • A 'Question and Answer' session involving representatives from the four main parties (Conservatives, Labour, Liberal Democrats and Plaid Cymru), including the question 'Why should young people vote?'
  • Presentation by a representative of the Electoral Commission
  • Group discussion on the main topics of the day.

Follow-up work

(2 weeks)

  • Research one topic (e.g. the Euro/hunting)
  • Ascertain the viewpoints of the political parties and the arguments for and against
  • Write a pamphlet outlining the main viewpoints (the similarities and differences between the parties), and presenting an evaluation, which incorporates your own personal viewpoint
