Language Week
Integrating the Language Module with aspects of Team Enterprise activity.
WBQ components
Language Module
+ aspects of the Team Enterprise activity
Key Skills opportunities
WO, PS (level 2 or 3)
Aim
To enable the students to take a full part in the School's Language Week.
Activity
Four days of intensive language tuition in Spanish, Italian and French, provided by members of staff.
The students were divided into three language-based groups.
(Large groups were divided into smaller groups.)
A week before the Module, the students were involved in a discussion about the arrangements for the International Week, and the requirements of the Enterprise activity. Ideas discussed included a stall / display / a song / show.
Phase 1
During the week prior to the event, the groups had to consider the various options and decide on the activity they were going to undertake during the Language Week. [Organising a stall to sell products or provide a service would contribute towards the Enterprise qualification.]
This involved the following:
- Outlining the reasons for and against various ideas.
- Set targets for each option (e.g. shop Р sell 50 cakes).
- Decide on the activity and consider factors that will affect the activity (e.g. location, resources, skills, time). [Elements of PS.]
- Outline the responsibilities of each member of the group Р giving reasons for the decision.
- Each individual to ensure they understand the requirements of their job. [Elements of WO.]
- Discuss with member of staff or adviser to ensure the task is feasible and appropriate.
- Each individual to draw up a personal action plan detailing what they are going to do, when, how, and arrangements for the next meeting of the group.
- Proceed with the arrangements in advance of the Language Week (e.g. ordering, research)
[Elements of PS and WO.]
N.B. Minutes of all group meetings and meetings with staff / adviser must be minuted, detailing all decisions taken.
Phase 2
During the Language Week
- Carry out the planned activity, using the language learned as much as possible with fellow students, members of staff and visitors.
- Adapt and develop the plan as required, in consultation with members of the group / staff.
- Make notes of all discussions.
- Gather as much evidence as possible (e.g. photographs, tape recordings).
Phase 3
Evaluation
WO - What were the strengths and weaknesses of the activity and the group, and your personal contribution. What aspects could be improved?
PS - Did the problem solving process work? How has your understanding of problem solving improved?
