Coleg Meirion Dwyfor
Sustainability
A short report from Gerallt Huws
As an integral part of their course, first year Welsh Bac students accepted an invitation to deliver a formal presentation at the Dysg Key Skills conference, Global Stewardship, on the theme of Sustainability.
The group presented practical and real ideas to support/sustain the local community economically, which could subsequently be easily transferred to other rural areas world wide eg recycling, purchasing local produce, the community controlling local tourism, using Dwyfor's natural resources to create electricity, protecting the local infra structure ie schools, shops, houses etc.
In delivering the presentation, the group used a variety of media, namely:
- PowerPoint presentation
- props such as 'Bob' the recycle bin and ecycling receptacle - for students to recycle during lunchtime their cans, plastic, paper etc
- free-standing exhibition banners
- posters
- leaflets
- working wind power model
- film made on location at CAT, including an interview with Ann MacGarry (Education Officer).
A number of links and visits had been initiated by the group over three months, namely:
- Gwynedd County Council (Recycle/sustainability sections)
- Centre for Alternative Technology
- Cilfor Primary School
Within the college, the group has arranged for the services of staff form a range of departments.
Students have also collected and collated research information from a range of internet sites including overseas.
Key Skills
This exercise has provided students with considerable opportunities to amass appropriate evidence for their respective portfolios, in particular:
- Working with Others
- Problem solving
- Communication (in part)
- Improving own learning and performance (in part)
Furthermore, the nature of their brief has enabled students to collect valid evidence for their WBQ, in particular:
- WEW Element 3.1);
- PSE (Element 4)
- WRE (Element 2)
Preparation for and participation in this conference developed and improved the students' social and personal skills.
