This resource provides the material for a complete unit of work. It may be used in conjunction with a visit to the Art Galleries at the National Museum Cardiff. The aim of the unit is to provide pupils with the tools to be able to describe, compare and analyse portrait paintings.

Pupils will be presented with two portraits from different periods and will be led through a series of activities which will teach elements of visual language and develop pupils’ understanding of the context in which portraits were painted. Pupils will be encouraged to make reasoned judgements and express opinions about a range of images, which will help them develop ideas for independent work
