Introduction

This lesson explains the principles of genetics and genetic crosses.

The purpose of the resource is to give students the appropriate knowledge and understanding of genetics required for KS4. The lesson begins with an explanation of Mendel's work followed by an explanation of genetic terms. The lesson then develops the understanding of genetics through monohybrid inheritance, incomplete dominance and sex determination.

This lesson meets the requirements of statements 3, 4 and 6 (and contributes towards statement 1) of the national curriculum KS4 programme of study for variation, inheritance and evolution (statements 3, 4 and 6 are part of sub-section Inheritance).

The interactive activities within the lesson can be used for reinforcement and assessment.

Interactive whiteboard activity 1
Aims and objectives, Mendel's experiment and F1 / F2 plants.
Interactive whiteboard activity 2
Chromosomes and genes, alleles and monohybrid inheritance - including glossary.
Interactive whiteboard activity 3
Dominant and recessive alleles, incomplete dominance and sex determination.
