Summary In this activity estimated areas are investigated. In the first part of the activity, the pupil is shown a picture and asked to select the correct choice of units for the area (ranging from mm2 to km2). In the second part of the activity a variety of objects are described and a selection of estimated areas are provided for the pupil to choose the most reasonable estimate. Prior learning required Pupils need to know that units of area are "squared" measures. Aims and objectives To provide pupils with practice at considering units of area and to allow pupils to refine their estimation of areas strategies and reinforce the importance of units. Suitable for Year 5 Suggestions for group and further activities Have pupils actually measure examples of the objects used in the activity: a sheet of newspaper, a bed sheet, a CD box, a radiator, their bedroom floor (homework), the playground, an exercise book, the top of a table, a slice of tomato, a letter in a book. For the last two they will have to approximate a rectangular shape around the object and this will help them consider some difficulties in finding areas accurately. Other shapes, such as their bedroom floor, may require them to calculate areas in parts. They could search the internet or library for information about the area of their town, city or village. Suggestions for differentiation This activity can be used with individual pupils to provide extension or support for those needing further practice.
