Summary Tell the pupils that you are all going to make a sandwich for a particular person and situation, eg for another teacher who has to take a sandwich to eat on a train. Go through all the different choices of bread and fillings. Ask pupils what they think of them and ask them which kitchen utensils they would use to prepare the sandwich. Remind them of health and safety issues. Teachers should introduce, explain and discuss the following words and concepts: filling, pitta, naan, sliced, texture and appearance. Create a sandwich and then discuss the finished product. Fill in the evaluation form. Print out the results for a class display. Suitable for Years 2 to 4 Prior learning required It will help pupils if they have had previous experiences of making and designing food products. Pupils should also understand or have seen pictures of the different types of breads and fillings. Aims and objectives Pupils should gain an understanding of how different choices of bread and sandwich fillings can affect the final outcome. Pupils should also have developed the vocabulary to enable them to evaluate the finished product. Timings Teachers should expect to spend around 10 minutes explaining and discussing each of the ingredients. Teachers can make as many sandwiches as they want but we would recommend four or five unless a display is to be created. Pupils should understand by the end that there is a relationship between their design and the final outcome. Suggestions for group activities Pupils may work with a facilitator around a small screen to create different choices that they then have to judge and evaluate. Pupils should have practical experience of designing and making sandwiches or a similar food product. They should also have opportunities to finish their product by decorating and adding detail in the form of garnish and presentation techniques. Pupils may need advice on how to use utensils safely and on food hygiene. Suggestions for differentiation Some pupils will need help in using a knife and other implements. More able pupils will be able to create more elaborate sandwiches and learn more elaborate presentation techniques or packaging. Pupils may find it easier to create a sandwich in the context of a particular purpose. Further activities Pupils should also be introduced to the idea of healthy eating in this lesson. This site allows you to make a simple sandwich and the pupils get some advice on healthy eating on the bread and filling choices: www.letsdiscover.org.uk/games.html. Curriculum links KS1 Design and technology: focus statement At Key stage 1, pupils should be taught to work with a limited range of tools and materials to make simple products. They explore how familiar products work and communicate their ideas as they work. Science Information technology Mathematics Literacy | |||||
