Introduction

This unit shows an appreciation of:

  • changing shopping habits
  • a shopping hierarchy within the urban area
  • the movement to out-of-town shopping centres
  • consequences for traditional shopping

These materials could be used to support the understanding of how and why the distribution of retailing has changed and is changing at key stage 3, and used to develop enquiry skills and the skills required to analyse maps and diagrams.

At key stage 4 the materials support the "Economic activities and their consequences" element of the WJEC GCSE Geography (A - mainstream) specification, in particular key question 4. How do changing shopping habits affect the distribution and nature of retailing?

OS maps, sketch diagrams and photographs are used for interpretation.

A set of background notes are provided as guidance for the teacher.
