Introduction

This resource pack explores the development of formalised nursing through the exploits of Wales' most famous nurse, Betsy Cadwaladyr, a contemporary of Florence Nightingale working in the Crimean War.

The starter activity is a brief tour of the life of Betsy Cadwaladyr and her dealings with Florence Nightingale. Pupils are asked to colour in the Crimean nurse's uniform from a contemporary description using an online paint box.

In the main activity, pupils compare and sequence the activities of Cadwaladyr in the 1850s with the activities of a modern-day nurse at Colwyn Bay hospital in 2003.

In the plenary activity, pupils sort activities carried out by nurses into old and modern, using a Venn diagram.

Worksheet 1 is a colouring activity using a painting by numbers method to compare the uniforms of a Crimean nurse with that of a modern-day nurse.

Worksheet 2 is a captioning activity based on three activities carried out by the modern nurse.

Worksheet 3 is a sequencing activity involving the life of a modern-day nurse.

This resource pack addresses sections 1.1, 2.3 and 5.1 of the history PoS in the national curriculum in Wales.
