Above the Ark is the Eternal Light or Ner Tamid. The Eternal Light is at the centre top of the picture. It is in the shape of a drum and has a golden crown on top. The light is always lit. It is a symbol that God is always present in the synagogue. The 10 Commandments are in the centre bottom of the picture. They are written in Hebrew. There are two columns of five commandments. The 10 commandments are the most important rules for the Jews. They are so important that they are written above the holy Ark. Do you know the 10 commandments? |
