17.  The mosque as a place of study

The mosque is a place of study as well as of prayer.  Muslims come to the mosque to learn more about their religion and about Allah.  There is often a separate room in the mosque where study classes and lectures are held on the Qur’an and Islam.

The Madrassa is the mosque school – something like the Christian Sunday School.  Children between about the age of 4 and 14 come to the madrassa to learn how to read Arabic and the Qur’an.  These lessons are often held after school or on weekends.  In the picture, Ahmed is studying the Qur’an in the special room in the Cardiff mosque.  He has learnt a quarter of the Qur’an off by heart.
