The chauri is a type of fan. It has a handle made of wood or metal. The rest is made of animal hair or nylon. When the Guru Granth Sahib is read, the granthi waves the chauri over the holy book from time to time. In a hot, dry country like India, where Sikhism began,
it used to be the custom to wave a fan over the heads of important people
to keep them cool and to keep insects away from them. It was a sign
of great respect. So by waving the chauri over the Guru Granth
Sahib, Sikhs are showing great respect to it and are treating it like a
human teacher. Can you see the chauri in the granthi’s hand?
