5. The Takht and the Manji - the raised platform and the stool

To show how important the Guru Granth Sahib (the Sikh holy book) is, it is placed on a raised platform, called the Rakht during the day. The rakht is found at the front of the prayer hall. On this rakht, there is a stool, called the manji, which is covered in fine materials.  The Guru Granth Sahib is placed on the manji. There is a canopy over the platform to protect the Guru Granth Sahib.  When it is not being read it is covered with a richly decorated cloth.
