4. The Guru Granth Sahib

When you enter the prayer hall, the first thing you see is the raised platform where the Guru Granth Sahib rests.  The Guru Granth Sahib is the holy book of the Sikhs.  This book is extremely important to Sikhs.  It guides them through their lives.  Sikhs see the book like a human religious teacher, or guru.  It tells them all they need to know about God and how they should live their lives.  Sikhs show great respect towards the Guru Granth Sahib.  They treat it as they would treat a very important person.

The Guru Granth Sahib is the most important feature in the prayer hall.  It is at the front of the room, and everyone faces it.   The word ‘gurdwara’ means ‘house of the Guru.  The word guru means ‘teacher’. The teacher is the Guru Granth Sahib.
