Senzenina

A traditional Zulu chant.

Shortly after the Second World War, the government of South Africa developed a new political system. It was known as apartheid. This is an Afrikaans word meaning separateness. Under this system, black African people were treated in a very different way to white people. Black people couldn't attend the same schools as whites. They couldn't use the same beaches or swimming pools. They couldn't live in nice places. They could only have the sort of job that white people wouldn't want to do. Most important of all, black people couldn't vote. This meant that they couldn't ever change the system.
Some black people decided to take up arms against the white government. Others took part in less violent protest. Thankfully, their voices were heard and in 1994, Nelson Mandela was elected as the first black president of South Africa. Did anything good ever come out of such a wicked political system. Thankfully yes. We are left with some absolutely wonderful music. Senzenina is a protest song from the struggle.

The words mean,

What have we done?
Our sin is that we are poor
Our sin is that we are black
They are killing us
Let Africa return
