Meet the choir?

There is nothing, absolutely nothing that can stir the heart of a Welshman more than the sound of a male voice choir. Whether it is in one of the great concert halls here in Wales or at a well known international venue, this style of music is guaranteed to raise a feeling of hiraeth.
There was a time when every Welsh valley, indeed almost every village had its very own Côr Meibion. Men throughout Wales would rush home from their shift at the colliery, steel-works or farm, quickly wash and change and get themselves down to their practice hall.
Thankfully, the tradition survives. Standards remain high and concert audiences around the world are still enthralled by the gentlemen from the Land of Song.
These pages are designed to give an introduction to the music of the Male Voice Choir. Their intended audience, children aged 7-11, will find a range of songs and hymns here:-

  • Mae Hen wlad fy nhadau. Our very own national anthem.

  • Cwm Rhondda. Often regarded as the anthem of the Welsh Rugby Union.

  • Rachie. The rousing hymn, I Bob un sy'n fyddlon

  • Men of Harlech. Wales’ call to battle.

  • Calon Lân. Everybody’s favourite.

  • And from further afield:-

  • Senzenina. A song of freedom from South Africa

  • I’m gonna walk. A spiritual from the deep South of the U.S.A.

  • These pages were commissioned by the members of the Morriston Orpheus Choir. It is their intention to keep this tradition alive and to the forefront of Welsh culture. This can only be achieved by regularly recruiting new members. Hopefully, children who learn from these web pages will remember the experience, when their bodies and voices become old enough to join the ranks of choristers in one of our country’s choirs. Hopefully, they will remember the times when they were able to sing along with the Morriston Orpheus Choir - internationally-acclaimed male voice choir from Morriston, Wales. Perhaps one day they’ll join us. Perhaps they will join one of the other fine choirs that are the pride of our nation. In the meantime, we sincerely hope that in some small way you enjoy the experience of joining us in song.
