Summary This activity is linked to the learnpremium key stage 2 science online lesson Nutrition and is in three parts. 1. An introduction to teeth - with a graphic called Where are my teeth? This is a labelled diagram showing a side view of the human jaws/teeth to show the upper and lower jaw and one labelled incisor, canine and molar.
- with an animation called Our teeth. This is the same diagram as above, but with a "rollover" function to reveal the names of the five colour-coded parts.
2. What are teeth made of? - with a graphic called What's inside a tooth? This is a labelled diagram showing the position of enamel, dentine and blood/nerves in a vertical section through a molar tooth.
- with an animation called Inside a tooth. This is the same diagram as above, but where the names of the main parts of the tooth are revealed using a "rollover" function.
3. Do you like the dentist? - with an animation called My poor tooth. This shows how a tooth decays and allows the teacher or pupils to match text to the diagrams.
The animations in the activity are derived from those in the online lesson and so the resources may be used to support each other. The lesson allows pupils to learn from diagrams and animations, and to benefit from committing to their own ideas by making choices. Suitable for Year 5/6 Using a non-interactive whiteboard The lesson can also be used with a projector and screen, as the teacher can still operate all animations using a standard mouse or infrared control. This allows a very similar presentation by the teacher, but limits the opportunities for pupils to perform activities on the screen. However, a flashcard-based approach can be used to involve the class (see Suggestions for group activities below). Prior learning required Pupils should know that: - they need to eat the right foods to remain healthy
- other animals also need to eat particular foods to remain healthy, like lions that eat meat and sheep that eat grass
Aims and objectives The objectives for this activity: - there are three types of teeth in our mouths
- a tooth is made of enamel, dentine and blood/nerves
- bacteria can cause tooth decay
Timings The activity takes about 25-30 minutes: - 10-15 minutes to teach pupils about the shapes, names and positions of different teeth then to test pupils' knowledge
- 5-10 minutes to teach pupils about the three parts of a tooth and what they are for, then to test their knowledge
- 5-10 minutes to teach pupils about the causes of tooth decay and how to prevent it, then to test their knowledge
Suggestions for group activities - The interactive whiteboard lesson relies on pupils coming to the board and showing what they know by operating the animations.
- With a non-interactive whiteboard the teacher can operate the animations according to a class response that the pupils indicate with coloured flashcards. The flashcard response could be used to introduce a whole-class approach.
Suggestions for differentiation Questions can be targeted at pupils according to ability, with: - the least able being asked to link cause and effect
- most pupils being asked to describe things using scientifically
- the most able being asked to explain how and why things happen
