- A grid reference is an address on a map.
- It identifies in which grid square on the map a place is located.
- It has four digits (eg 7242).
- The first two digits tell you how far left or right to look on the map.
- The second two digits tell you how far up or down to look on the map.
- To remember to look left and right and then up and down, remember the saying "Along the corridor, up the stairs".
