• A grid reference is an address on a map.
  • It identifies in which grid square on the map a place is located.
  • It has four digits (eg 7242).
  • The first two digits tell you how far left or right to look on the map.
  • The second two digits tell you how far up or down to look on the map.
  • To remember to look left and right and then up and down, remember the saying "Along the corridor, up the stairs".
