Dafydd Drops a Goal is a poem about rugby. It tells of a young boy dropped to the substitutes' bench during an important cup match. He comes on to play during the dying minutes of the game and saves it with a drop goal.
The unit was specifically written to provide pupils, particularly boys, with some challenging material that would perhaps change their attitude towards poetry.
Aims
Reading - to read text that provides challenging subject matter; that broadens perspective and extends thinking; and that includes figurative language in poetry
Speaking and listening - to investigate grammatical constructions associated with verb tenses
Writing - to aid and improve spelling by looking at rhyme endings
Ideal for years 5 and 6.
