Through the following activities, pupils will learn:

• that when some materials are squashed, pulled, pushed, turned, twisted or stretched the shape of the object will change
• that forces affect different materials in different ways
• to predict what is likely to happen when different materials are pushed, pulled, stretched or bent
• to carry out an investigation based on their predictions and interpret the results

These activities can be used to address 2.3 and 2.4 of physical processes and 1.2 and 2.1 of the scientific enquiry programme of studies in the national curriculum for Wales.

Starter activity
Learn about the forces that change the shape of objects and identify which forces are at work in a given instance.

Main session part 1
Predict how an object will react to a given force.

Main session part 2
Compare the effects of light and strong forces.

Main session part 3
Complete the table of how objects' shapes will be effected by different forces.

Plenary
Summary of forces and their effects.
