Sharing cakes

This teacher-led activity illustrates the principle of division by sharing and fractions. The setting is a children's party with a variable number of cakes and children. The teacher selects the division sum to be worked out by choosing a number of cakes and children.

As an example there could be five children and two cakes. When the "cut cakes" button is clicked the cakes divide into fractions. In this case they would divide into fifths. Each child would receive two fifths. The teacher would then drag the correct number of segments to each place setting so that each child has his or her fair share.
