What changes did the Acts of Union in 1536 and 1543 make?

Outcomes of the Acts of Union:

  • Wales was joined with England, which meant that people living in Wales had the same rights as people living in England.
  • Wales was divided into counties as in England. This meant that laws could be imposed by magistrates in the same way as in England.
  • The language used in the law courts and government would be English, even though most people in Wales spoke Welsh.
  • Wales would be represented by members of Parliament who would take part in making laws for both England and Wales.

Wales before 1536 and after

The old map drawn by Humphrey Lloyd in 1573 showing both the old names and the new, but it shows the old parts of Wales very well: the Marches of Wales in the east, the Principality in the north.

Many of the Welsh living in these two parts of Wales felt they were unfairly treated and hoped that this would change when Henry Tudor became king.
