Teachers' notes

Summary

This is an investigation of living and working in Tudor and Stuart Wales. This is one of the examples identified in the national curriculum as an in-depth study for the period of Study Unit 2, 1500-1760. Sources of information for the period in Wales are not extensive. This outline seeks to give a flavour of life and work at the time by concentrating on the different levels of society and the effects of the Acts of Union, for example on the Prichard family in south Wales.

Suitable for

Year 8

Prior learning

Pupils would have been taught about some of the major political and religious changes of the period in Wales together with something of the impact of the Tudors on Wales. This will allow them to put their investigation of the changes in the way of life into context.

Aims and objectives

  • To understand some of the differences in social structure in 16th- and 17th -century Wales
  • To understand something of the way of life in the 16th- and 17th -century
  • To understand the nature of the Acts of Union
  • To understand the nature of the historical sources from the period
  • To compare life and work at the beginning and end of the century in Wales

Timings

Within the context of the prior learning it is envisaged that this would take a single lesson to investigate. However, it would probably form only part of the in-depth study and only one of several resources for teaching the period.

Further activity suggestions

  • Pursuing an investigation of a particularly local example of a Tudor/Stuart gentry family
  • Investigating other aspects of life in Wales, for example business and trade by using sources such as the Welsh Port Books
  • Investigating the different aspects of life and work in towns making a contrast with the rural setting for the examples of the Prichard family
  • Finally linking with the major political developments and moves towards the Civil War in Wales as the second section of Study Unit 2
