If you had to fly over areas of Wales, it would be clear that
the spacing of settlements is very different.
In certain parts, towns may be compact, with shops, offices, and
houses all very close together. Other parts of the landscape will
have scattered settlements, where the houses are far apart from one
another and there are only small hamlets. You will notice that
settlement patterns vary.
What are the differences between types of settlement and do they
differ in their characteristics?
Point to ponder
The easiest way to remember the different settlements is to
think of towns or cities that you have visited. Think of the
activities that occurred in the area. Were there lots of people?
Was it a farming community or was it based on industry and
services? Did it have lots of different functions?
Activity
Match up the settlement type
with its description by dragging the words into the spaces
provided.
