Session 3.4a: E-assessment

Aim:

To explore different approaches to e-assessment, including e-portfolios.

Objectives:

By the end of the session you will have:

  • identified different approaches to e-assessment, including e-portfolios
  • reviewed regulatory principles for e-portfolios as published by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA)
  • explored the use of e-portfolios for recording progress and achievement
  • reviewed two case studies on the use of e-portfolios.

Resources:

You will need:

  • a computer with internet access
  • a wireless keyboard and mouse
  • your E-Guides USB memory stick
  • Case studies

Time allocated:

60 minutes

Task:

  1. Working in the group and using the mindmapping software and a wireless keyboard and mouse if available, create a mindmap of your existing understanding and definitions of e-assessment (10 minutes).

  2. Your facilitator will give you a brief introduction to E-assessment (10 minutes).
    This introduction is supported by the documents:
  1. Explore if the definitions of your group’s mindmap are similar to the definitions provided in the introduction.

  2. Working in pairs or in small groups, review the case studies provided which explore different approaches to e-portfolios. Use the template Activity: Case studies to discuss these and to identify if any of the approaches presented would be relevant for your local situation (20 minutes).
    1. Springboard Southwark: Development of e-portfolios (you can also watch a video about this, provided on your E-Guides USB memory stick).

    2. Acacia Training and Development: Use of MP3 voice recording and online portfolios

    3. Hounslow Adult and Community Education: Use of audio recorders in guitar improvers course

    4. Warrington Borough Council Lifelong Learning Service: Use of learning platforms and online portfolios

    5. WEA South West: Use of digital technology with ESOL learners.
  1. Still working in pairs or in small groups, complete Activity: Recording the learner journey. Discuss how different digital recording technology can be used for producing evidence for e-portfolios. You might explore some of the technology available as part of the E-Guides kit (MP3 player, PDA, digital video recorder, digital stills camera) (20 minutes).
