Session 2.5: Enabling technology

Aim:

To explore the use of technology to make learning more inclusive and accessible.

Objectives:

By the end of the session you will have:

  • identified the impact of some disabilities on the learning experience
  • explored accessibility issues to ensure learners with disabilities are able to use technology to access learning
  • explored the implications of the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA)
  • identified how you can use technology to make learning more accessible for learners with a range of abilities.

Resources:

You will need:

  • a computer with internet connection
  • your E-Guides USB memory stick
Time allocated:  45 minutes

Task:

  1. Your facilitators will provide you with an overview of equipment/technology that can be used to enhance accessibility. This is supported by the sheet Inclusive technology (10 minutes).

  2. Complete the Activity: Accessible learning (10 minutes).

  3. In pairs, view the SimDis website. This site simulates certain disabilities and gives an impression of what learners with disabilities experience (10 minutes).

  4. Complete the Activity: Exploring accessibility to explore the implications of the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) on your practice (15 minutes).
