Session 1.3: Applications of e-learning

Aim: To explore the tools available for e-learning and their use to support and enhance the learner journey and stages of teaching and learning across different areas of learning.

Objectives:

By the end of this session you will have:
  • identified a range of tools available for e-learning
  • identified ways in which various technologies could be utilised to support each stage of the learner journey
  • considered the potential application of various technologies to enhance teaching and learning across different areas of learning.

Resources:

You will need:

  • a computer (internet optional)
  • your E-Guides USB memory stick
  • flip chart and pens
  • your Reflective log

Time allocated:

45 minutes

Task:

  1. As an example of the range of tools available for use, see SDELC Common Modules > Getting to grips with e-learning > The potential of e-learning in teaching and learning. Follow the animation demonstrating Fred’s approach to planning (5 minutes).

Or, if you are working offline:

Working in groups, consider the software, hardware and communication tools you might use to plan a teaching session  (5 minutes).

Many organisations use the concept of ‘the learner journey’, or ‘learner’s journey’ when examining their provision for self-assessment and quality improvement purposes. The Good Practice Database, now located on the Excellence Gateway, recommends a matrix, Measuring Up – the learner’s journey and the Common Inspection Framework PDF Icon which you can find on your E-Guides USB memory stick.  The stages of the learner journey may be considered a little differently depending on the sector you work in.

  1. Look at the two activity sheets provided and decide with your group which is more applicable to your situation and which is your preferred version of the document.  Amend the pro forma if you wish.
    1. Activity: Applying e-learning tools to the learner journey
    2. Activity: Applying e-learning tools to different stages of teaching and learning.
  1. In your group, imagine a course that is completely different from anything you would normally do, for example bricklaying or flower arranging.  Be as innovative and imaginative as you can as you incorporate e-learning tools into each stage of the teaching and learning process. You can assume that all the e-tools you need are available to you and you know how to use them. Use a flip chart to record your ideas so you can share them with others (25 minutes).

(For further ideas on using e-learning tools in the teaching and learning process view the documents Examples: Useful e-learning tools across the learner journey and Examples: Useful e-learning tools across different stages of teaching and learning.)

  1. Open your preferred version of the learner journey activity sheet from your E-Guides USB memory stick and save a copy in your personal folder. Make some notes about ideas for your own practice. Your trainer will show you how to link this document to your presentation My e-learning journey (10 minutes).

  2. Review. Discuss with a partner – “What have you learnt this morning?” Make your own notes in your Reflective log (5 minutes).
