Hot Potatoes™ - The Masher

In-page imageWhy use The Masher?

A Hot Potatoes™ Masher activity produces an exercise with links to multiple resources (including multiple Hot Potatoes™ exercises and other resources such as Microsoft® Word or Adobe® Acrobat® files).

The unregistered version of Hot Potatoes™ and Masher software restricts the user and, without the registration key, it is only possible to link three units of Hot Potatoes™ exercises. A unit created with the Masher can share the same appearance settings and be linked automatically by navigation buttons, and it includes an automatically created index page.

How to create a Masher activity

The following instructions will help you create a Masher activity shown above.

  1. Prepare three Hot Potatoes™ activities. See JCloze, JCross, JQuiz, JMatch and JMix instructions. Save the activities in one folder on your E-Guides USB memory stick.

  2. In-page imageStart Hot Potatoes™ (Start > All Programs > Hot Potatoes 6) and double-click on The Masher.

  3. Click on Add Files and browse for the previously saved Hot Potatoes™ activities. Select one activity and Open. Repeat for two more activities.

  4. Save the completed activity (File > Save As) on your E-Guides USB memory stick. Note that the file is a .jms type. This is the file you will need to open if you want to edit the activity.

  5. To enable the interactive exercise as a linked activity click on Build Unit at the bottom of the dialogue box.

  6. If the version of Hot Potatoes™ is unregistered The Masher will offer a prompt to confirm that only three activities can be linked.

  7. The Unit builds and you will see a prompt Would you like to view the Unit now?  Click OK.

Now that you have tried a Masher activity why not create another one with activities you have created?

Suggestions for use

The following are examples of learning materials produced using the Masher in Hot Potatoes software. Several activities can be linked to check on learning and give a natural progression through a set of activities.
