Teachers' notes

The lesson aims to give students an understanding of how William gained control of England and Wales after the Norman Invasion. It establishes the structure of the feudal system and looks at castle building and development over time.

Prior learning required

Students would need to have background knowledge of the Battle of Hastings.

Aims and objectives

Students to primarily address key elements 1 and 2.

Timings

Dependent upon ability of group - could be completed in 1 or 2 lessons.

Further activity suggestions

Students could use web links to investigate different types of Welsh castles. Students could present a fact sheet on different castles, could present a brochure on castles, complete a short project on how to build a castle or even write a piece of extended writing with the title "Why did castles change?"
