This unit provides students with the opportunity to explore the idea of sustainable development and encourages the development of their own values with regard to environmental and political attitudes and choices.

At KS3 the material supports the national curriculum for geography by encouraging students to think about:

• how conflicting demands on the environment arise
• how the consideration of sustainable development affects environmental plans and management
• different sources of energy and the supplies of these resources
• the nature, possible cause and potential effects of global environmental change
• how the consideration of sustainable development affects international responses to change
