This lesson is aimed at the process of examining and evaluating manufacturing processes and products. This is referred to as product analysis.
The resource pack aims to encourage students to identify and use criteria to judge the quality of other people's products, including the extent to which they meet a clear need, their fitness for the purpose, whether resources have been used appropriately, and their impact beyond the purpose for which they were designed.
Students should find out:
- how multiple copies can be made of the same product
- the design of products for commercial quantity explaining production methods
- the types of advertising, symbols, logos and signs and legal information that would be found on the outside of a commercial product
- issues regarding waste management of plastic products
The lesson is suitable for students following manufacturing and design and technology courses at GCSE level. The plenary activity requires the teacher to bring into class a range of products for review. More details can be found in the teachers' notes.
