How was it used?

• The resource was used by three classes in Year 5 as a revision and for some an introduction to the Welsh Alphabet.  All children were second language pupils.
• Year 5 pupils enjoyed using the NGFL Welsh Alphabet resource.  With regard to boys’ attainment, they enjoyed the nature of the resource and liked that they could control the pace of the activity when working at individual PCs.
• Pupils were introduced to the resource using an interactive whiteboard as a class.
• Then in their thinking partner pairings, they used the resource in the ICT suite with headphones to practise the sounds.
• It proved very helpful in teaching correct pronunciation of the welsh letters in the alphabet.  Pupils sought the advice of their peers as well as using the resource interactively.  
• It is also interesting for the children to see all the letters at once as some pupils were unaware of the differences between the Welsh and English Alphabets.
• The second activity, showing a word for each letter, was also helpful and inspired the children to create their own food dictionary in Welsh.  The pupils were much more confident than in previous attempts at the activity and read their work to their partners and also presented their work to the class and some to the whole year group.

Impact and Outcomes

• The main outcome was a noticeable improvement in the pronunciation of the Welsh alphabet and associated sounds.
• Because pupils could home in and listen repeatedly to individual sounds, they could focus on their own learning needs.
• Concentration of the pupils was very good, even though it’s designed as a KS1 activity; it was beneficial to use it with KS2 second language learners.
• Boys appeared to focus clearly on the activity as they could control the pace of the activity and enjoyed the features associated with the resource.  Visually, the resource is attractive to pupils.
• The three teachers involved, all with varying skill levels in ICT, found it easy to use. Two of the teachers are non Welsh speaking and appreciated hearing the vocabulary of the resource themselves.
• Children with additional learning needs coped very well with the activity, whoever they were partnered with.
