How was it used?

The Locus resource was used for the starter and the main activity of an introductorily lesson on loci for a low ability class in KS4.  The lesson was set in a classroom with a computer and a projector.

• The activity engaged pupils and helped them to sustain attention on their learning. The use of the activity provided extended concentration for pupils and the development of thinking and problem-solving skills.
• The visual and kinaesthetic element of the resource appealed to many in particular the boys.
• The visual demonstration offered by the resource ensured a faster pace of lesson compared to other methods.
• The activities were flexible and could be adapted to a variety of working situations. They provided opportunities for discussion and  set short term goals for pupils to progress to being able to apply loci to practical situations.
• Peer assessment was used effectively during the activity and pupils were taught to be sensitive and to use constructive criticism. The feedback pupils received motivated them and made learning fun.
• Setting questions in a practical situation engaged the pupils and increased their appreciation for the work, as they understood the relevance to their lives.

Impact and Outcomes

• Pupils were engaged and motivated to work. They enjoyed the varied activities and enjoyed opportunity to work with others in pairs and in small groups.
• This activity had a positive effect on the boys in the class as the more visual element of the work appealed to them.
• The varied and fast paced activities set short term goals for the learner which focused the attention of the boys in the class.
• Pupils were enthusiastic and enjoyed the opportunity to be active participants in the lesson
• The pupils worked well in small groups, often without direct supervision. They collaborated effectively, listening to each other's opinions and points of view.
• Pupils were sensitive to others and used constructive criticism. They gave respect to the pupil answering the question or working at the whiteboard and encouraged them with applause.
• There were plenty of opportunities for pupils to develop their thinking, communication and problem solving skills.
• The real life application of loci appealed to the pupils. The boys responded well to the construction based question and appreciated the relevance of loci outside of the classroom.

Learner Feedback

Pupils were engaged and motivated throughout the lesson. The real life application and practical aspect of the activities gained the interested of pupils.
