How was it used?
The resource was used as a starter to generate a discussion on ‘Averages’
- By estimating the number of rugby players and using averages to decide on a final answer, pupils used and developing their numerical skills.
- The resource wass inclusive in that pupils of varying abilities used it and all were involved in the activity with the addition of personal mini whiteboards.
- The interactive and visual element of the resource also appealed to many in particular the boys.
- The activity engaged pupils and helped them to sustain attention on their learning.
- The nature of the activity and its ability to provide instant feedback to pupils allowed them to evaluate their answers and act on this.
Impact and Outcomes
- The pupils were very positive and enjoyed the challenge of estimating numbers in a short period of time. Pupils were enthusiastic and enjoyed the opportunity to be active participants in the lesson
- The activity instantly engaged the pupils, helped them to sustain attention on their learning and made learning fun.
- The activity provided pupils with opportunities to develop their numeracy skills as they estimated numbers and also used ‘averages’ to decide on a final answer.
- The activity aided pupils in developing their thinking and learning and was suitable for their age and ability.
- The nature of the resource enabled every pupil to participate in the activity and contribute to the team’s final answer.
- The provision of instant feedback meant that pupils could evaluate their estimating methods and act on this to improve their next answer.
- The activity has had a clear impact on boys. There was a marked improvement in boys' engagement because of the visual resource and their ability to interact with the resource.
Learner Feedback
Pupils were engaged and motivated throughout the lesson. They found the estimating activity fun and interesting and the pupils were enthusiastic to share their answers with one another using the mini whiteboards.
