How was it used?

These activities played a significant factor in the development of pupils’ learning, thinking and numeracy skills when learning about carroll diagrams

• The resource was inclusive in that pupils of different abilities were catered for. Lower ability pupils sorted data into Carroll diagrams with two groups (1 column and 2 rows) and higher ability pupils sorted data into four groups (2 columns and 2 rows).
• The activity engaged pupils helping them to focus attention on their learning.
• The kinaesthetic and visual element of the resource appealed to many including the boys.
• Instant feedback in the main activity allowed pupils to evaluate their answers and act on this.
• The activity provided pupils with opportunities to develop their numeracy skills when sorting numbers into groups according to the specified criteria.

Impact and Outcomes

• The activity aided pupils in developing their thinking and learning and was suitable for their age and ability.
• Pupils were enthusiastic and enjoyed the opportunity to be active participants in the lesson
• The teacher was able to differentiate tasks using the resource. Lower ability pupils concentrated on Carroll diagrams with two groups and higher ability pupils concentrated on Carroll diagrams with four groups.
• The activity instantly engaged the pupils, helped them to sustain attention on their learning and made learning fun.
• There was a marked improvement in the boys’ engagement due to the more engaging visual and kinaesthetic activities and the opportunities for pupils to be active participants in the lesson.
• The activity provided pupils with opportunities to develop their numeracy skills when sorting numbers into groups according to the specified criteria.
• The provision of instant feedback meant that pupils could evaluate their answers and act on this correcting any incorrect answers.

Learner Feedback

Pupils were engaged and motivated throughout the lesson. They were keen to participate in the activities and many enjoyed the opportunity to ‘have a go’ on the IWB

Lesson Learnt

Pupils enjoyed creating their own Carroll diagrams and choosing their own sorting criteria. There could have been more opportunity for them to do this in the lesson.
