Secondary foci: Inclusive, Literacy Skills, Reflective practice,

How was it used?

The topic being studied in the school is ‘All About Me’.  The resource was used to enhance the teaching and learning in Knowledge and Understanding of the World  (Myself and Other Living Things – To recognise and name the main external parts of a human body) which was addressed cross curricularly with Creative Development  (Art, Craft and Design – To design and make simple mechanisms).

This is a Year 1 class of 27 children.  24 of the children speak English as an additional language so developing vocabulary is important.

In a previous lesson the children had had opportunity to draw around the outline of a child in the class.  The different body parts had been named and measured.  The children had used ‘My World – Person’ to individually label a body.  The NGfL resource was used to reinforce and consolidate that work with the whole class and introduce the Creative Development work of making a puppet using split pins to join the arms and legs, checking back to the resource to ensure that all body parts had been included.

The visual stimulus provided by the resource was motivating for the children.  The immediate feedback provided supported learning as the labels cannot be positioned in an incorrect place. The teacher encouraged the children to sound out the words and work out what each label said before it was positioned. Upon completion the words were listened to and the children saw that an arrow points to the body part.  This was good reinforcement for the children.

During the plenary session the children looked at each others leaf pictures, photos of the body pictures created outside and puppet models.  They evaluated each others work using the 2 stars and a wish approach ie. 2 good points and how they could improve one aspect next time.

Impact and Outcomes

The childrens vocabulary in relation to the body parts was developed and reinforced.  The expected outcome - that the children would be able to name the external parts of the human body - was achieved by the majority of the pupils.  The children were also able to read and write the names of the body parts with support from the resource.
