Learning Within and Beyond: An approach to developing Communication Skills using a Welsh Legend
By providing a context for the development of skills, pupils will have a real purpose for speaking/listening, reading and writing and will engage in motivating and meaningful activities.

Mary Medlicott is an author and storyteller. She has written many books including those based on her childhood memories of growing up in Pembrokeshire.

In this resource she shares one of her stories with teachers to be used as a stimulus for activities to develop Oracy, Reading and Writing.

Contained in this comprehensive resource are planning documents and lesson plans that focus on fiction and non-fiction activities to support teachers.

The title ‘Learning Within and Beyond’ is intended to reflect the fact that by using a narrative text as in a legend, this text may then be used as a springboard to develop non-fiction across the curriculum.

Teachers will be encouraged to think about the skills that are being developed through using the activities and how these skills can be transferred to other areas of the curriculum.

Cross phase working also ensures continuity of approach and consistency of terminology.
