On Thursday 9th March we visited Joseph Parry's Cottage in Chapel Row. As we walked through the door we felt like we'd gone back in time to the 1840's. We went into a little pantry where all the food used to be stored, it was extremely small, dark and very cold a bit like a modern day fridge! Most of the food was stored on shelves but the food that needed to be kept cold was stored on a big, cold stone slab. There were some unusual tools used to prepare the food and we all wanted a closer look at them even though the room was so small. We left the pantry and went into the main living room which was much bigger than the pantry but still smaller than today's living rooms. There was a big fire place where most of the cooking was done and a few chairs were gathered around it. Everybody was interested in the fire place because there were so many objects of different shapes around it. We all wondered what the objects were used for and we found out that the more unusual ones were used for baking bread. We compared the old oven with our modern ones and noticed a great difference. The biggest difference was our ovens are much bigger and the old oven was very small! After looking at most of the objects in the living room we each went in turn to the biggest bedroom. The mattress was made of straw and when we felt it, it was hard and lumpy we wouldn't like to sleep on it one bit! We looked around the bedroom and noticed a little baby's crib underneath the very small window. Then bedroom was very cold and so was the rest of the cottage we enjoyed our visit but we definitely wouldn't like to have lived in the 1840's!
