The Ynysfach engine house during the industrial revolution housed a large pump which supplied the furnaces with air. Visit the engine house today and you will find a number of slides and exhibits which help us understand what life in the iron works was like. We found out that iron is made out of coke, iron ore and limestone. The tools used in all works all had long handles because of the boiling molten iron. The ingredients used to make iron were found on the hillside at Merthyr Tydfil. They were then tipped into the top of the furnace, and was tapped out of the bottom of the furnace when it was ready. The molten iron was poured into the pig-beds. When the iron was solid it was sent to the refinery to be moulded and shaped by the blacksmith. When the iron was ready it was sent all around the world.
