The story of Branwen
This lesson uses the story of Branwen, daughter of Llyr, one of the four branches of the Mabinogi, as a basis for teaching comprehension, speech marks and adjectives. It begins with a simplified presentation of the story.
The main activity presents drawings of Branwen and Bendigeidfran. Pupils assign adjectives to each character by gender.
The plenary requires the correct positioning of speech marks into an extract of the story.
There are five supporting worksheets at text and sentence level:
- two text level activities broadly differentiated to pitch at level 2-3 and at level 4-5
- level 2-3 focuses on literal interpretation, level 4-5 on inference and deduction.
- sentence level - at level 2 pupils are required to punctuate a passage using capital letters and full stops; at level 3 pupils are required to restructure a passage in direct speech by putting in paragraph breaks
- at level 4 pupils are required to add speech punctuation to an unpunctuated passage
- at levels 3 and above the original text is used, but a simplified version is used at level 2
