Outline of the activity
Young children bring into school a variety of their toy cars/vehicles. They ‘play’ with the toys and with the teacher, discuss the control they have as to which direction the cars go in or how far they travel. They ask “Why?”

Skills Covered
Children begin to understand the meaning of ‘control’. They investigate control devices and understand that control often requires a series of instructions given or manipulated through the control box - on/off/forward/backwards/turn. Take part in discussions during and after the activity.

Rationale
An activity to introduce the concept of ‘control’ through play using equipment that the children are familiar with.

Controlling our cars - outsideResult
Children discuss the outcomes of their investigation. Photographs were taken and displayed.
