How was it used?

This resource was used as the starter activity in a lesson on ‘Number patterns’ and played a significant factor in the development of pupils’ learning, thinking and communication skills.

• As there was no access to an IWB or projector in the classroom the teacher adapted the resource to be used as a paper activity for pupils in groups of four.  
• The activity engaged pupils, helping pupils to focus attention on their learning
• The resource was flexible in that it could be used with an Interactive whiteboard, computer and projector or the questions could be transferred to paper resources.
• The resource was inclusive in that all pupils of a wide range of abilities can attempt to answer the question.
• Pupils worked well in small groups often without direct supervision. Pupils were encouraged to discuss, reason and evaluate answers. They collaborated effectively, listened to each others opinions and points of view and shared decisions amongst the members of the group.
• Peer assessment was used effectively during the activity and pupils were taught to be sensitive and to use constructive criticism.
• The activity allowed pupils to use and develop their numeracy skills as they were encouraged to think of examples that supported or disagreed with their answers and the answers of others.

Impact and Outcomes

• Pupils were engaged by the activity. They were enthusiastic to participate and to share their ideas within their small groups.
• Pupils of all abilities were actively thinking throughout the activity, reasoning and evaluating their answers and the answers of others.
• There were opportunities for pupils to work with others, listening, discussing and collaborating ideas to agree on an answer. Pupils were sensitive to others and used constructive criticism.
• The use of pupils’ thumbs to share their answers was simple and quick and ensured that all pupils could participate sharing their answers with others in the class.
• There were opportunities for pupils to practice their numeracy skills as they thought of examples that supported their decisions.

Learner Feedback

Pupils were engaged and motivated during the activity.  They enjoyed the opportunity to share their answers with each other in their small groups and also as a whole class.

Lesson Learnt

The resource can be easily adapted and used in different ways. Although displayed in a format suitable for an IWB or projector, to be used at the front of the class it is also effective as a paper activity in small groups.
