How was it used?

This thinking skill resource asks pupils to start questioning stereotypes in Wales, discuss positive and negative features of their local area and develop thoughts for the future.

The pupils had the opportunity to look at and understand what at an area’s identity and culture is and how their local area and Wales could be described in the 21st century.

There are several thinking skills activities for partner, class or group discussions.

An interactive whiteboard was needed to deliver the different tasks within the resource. There were opportunities to work away from the board where the children were encouraged to discuss with a partner or within a group.

This resource covers aspects of the Identity and Culture, Natural Environment and Choices and Decisions themes in ESDGC.

Impact and Outcomes

I found that by varying the approach to my lessons by using ICT as a tool, more pupils were actively involved in the lessons via a number of challenging thinking/practical activities in the resource.

I discovered the children were engaged and enthusiastic during the lesson and were keen to research the topic studied.

As well as increased enthusiasm, I felt that pupils were involved in a number of individual/partner and class tasks that challenged their initial thoughts and knowledge of Wales and the local area.

By looking at how Wales is stereotyped, looking at the area’s identity and culture I feel the children have developed their knowledge and understanding further regarding Wales and the local area. They have also shown understanding regarding how opinion has changed towards Wales in the 21st century

Lesson Learnt

Allowing children to share their ideas as a group leads for a deeper understanding of a topic.
