How was it used?

This unit invited learners to consider their own ideas and understanding of the properties of Materials, using video, animations, images and questioning strategies.

Learners were encouraged to think critically, to reflect on their own ideas and to listen to the ideas held by others in the class. There were opportunities for collaborative learning as well as independent reflection on Materials and their Properties.

Pupils were encouraged to develop their ideas using the online tools available within the resource and worked with their partners to develop their thinking skills throughout the activity.

The learners were exposed to an extensive range of vocabulary regarding the topic and were prompted by the questions embedded within the resource as appropriate.

Impact and Outcomes

• Pupils were engaged by the questioning of the teacher, in particular the prompt questions within the resource.
• The pupils were keen to use the resource and found the layout helpful to be able to make notes about their ideas.  
• The step by step approach of the resource aids the teacher to lead the pupils and the teacher can choose to use all or some of the resource according to need.
• Many opportunities are available for the teacher to question the pupils using varying approaches using lower and higher order thinking skills.

Learner Feedback

• The pupils enjoyed the activity.  
• They were able to question each other effectively and develop their thinking skills.
• They enjoyed the video activity in guessing what material was making the sound
• Pupils agreed that they were able to develop their investigation with the help of the resource.

Computer suite with 18 Windows PCs, note making materials such as mini whiteboards and marker pens.  

Lesson Learnt

Pupils focused well using the online tools that are available.  They were able to directly record their thoughts using the text tool and print appropriate screens for recording purposes.
