How was it used?
The resource was used to investigate 2-D and 3-D shapes in the context of a Welsh castle.
- The activities were used for the starter and main session of the lesson.
- The activities played a factor in developing pupils’ sense of Welshness and understanding of the history of Wales whilst also developing Mathematical knowledge, learning, thinking and communication skills.
- The kinaesthetic and visual element of the resource appealed to many in particular the boys.
- The activities engaged pupils and helped them to sustain attention on their learning.
- The nature of the activity and its ability to provide instant feedback to pupils allowed them to evaluate their answers and act on this.
- Pupils used the resource working in pairs and small groups, often without direct supervision.
Impact and Outcomes
- Pupils enjoyed the opportunity to learn about the Castles of Wales and Castle Coch. Pupils were engaged and motivated to work as they studied 2-D and 3-D shapes in a different context.
- By setting the topic in this context the work becomes more relevant and meaningful for the pupils.
- Pupils improved their Mathematical knowledge and also their awareness of the history and life of Wales
- The activities had a positive effect on the more challenging boys as they enjoyed the opportunity to have a go with the IWB. They also enjoyed the opportunity to learn about shapes in a construction context.
- The activity helped pupils develop their thinking and learning and was suitable for their age and ability.
- The provision of feedback motivates the pupils and makes learning fun. Pupils can evaluate their own results and act on this.
- The pupils worked well in small groups, often without direct supervision.
- Pupils were enthusiastic and enjoyed the opportunity to be active participants in the lesson
- There were opportunities for pupils to develop their thinking, communication and problem solving skills.
Learner Feedback
Pupils enjoyed investigating 2-D and 3-D shapes in a different context. They enjoyed learning about Castle Coch and understood the relevance of Mathematics outside the classroom. Pupils were keen to participate in the activities and many enjoyed the opportunity to use the IWB at the front of the class.
