How was it used?

The resource was used for the starter, main activity and plenary of a lesson on dimensions, set in a classroom with an IWB.

• The activities played a factor in the development of pupils’ learning, thinking and communication skills.
• There was a marked improvement in boys' engagement because of more visual resources and because they are able to ‘get up’ and have a go with the interactive whiteboard.
• The activities engaged pupils and helpe them to sustain attention on their learning.
• The activities were flexible and could be adapted to a variety of working situations. They provided opportunities for discussion and set short term goals for pupils to progress to a full understanding of dimensions and their formulae.
• Peer assessment was used effectively during the activity and pupils were taught to be sensitive and to use constructive criticism.
• Pupils listened more attentively when others were engaged with interactive whiteboard activities so that there was greater learning from their peers.  They took turns more easily and they showed greater respect for others, often giving applause to celebrate each other’s success.

Impact and Outcomes

• Pupils were engaged and motivated to work. Pupils were enthusiastic and enjoyed the opportunity to be active participants in the lesson.
• There were opportunities for pupils to develop their thinking and communication skills.
• The pupils enjoyed the opportunity to work in small groups. They collaborated effectively, listening to each other's opinions and points of view.
• The flexibility of the activities meant that they were easily adapted to individual, pair, group or whole class teaching.
• The visual and kinaesthetic aspect of the resource allowed pupils to sustain attention on their learning. There was an improvement in boys' engagement because they were able to ‘get up’ and have a go with the interactive whiteboard.
• The short and progressive activities set short term goals for pupils to achieve. This appealed to many of the boys in the class.
• Pupils listened attentively to the pupil engaged with interactive whiteboard activities.
• Pupils discussed, explained and challenged answers, supporting each other in their learning.     
• The use of mini whiteboards ensured that all pupils could participate and every pupils answer was considered before deciding on the class’ final answers in the plenary activity.

Learner Feedback

Pupils were keen to participate in the activities and many enjoyed the opportunity to use the IWB at the front of the class.
