Secondary foci: Essential Skills Wales, Work Based Learning, Extended Learning,

How was it used?

In a lesson to demonstrate the different options available for the accommodation of small mammals. Using the video clips as reference they discussed  what diseases could be relevant to the different species of small mammals. They then had to decide and form a plan that would show how infection could be reduced and also identify risk areas. They had to research stress in a small mammal and how you could tell if it was suffering from stress.

During the session the learners also compled the interactive tasks that are included within the resource.

There was time allocated for discussion and to watch the different video clips. All of the video clips didn’t have to be viewed and they can be downloaded and put into Moodle for the learners to view at any time.

Problem solving could have been  included when the learners had to design a puzzle for the animal to interact with. This will be done in another session.

Impact and Outcomes

The videos were well received and they enjoyed watching them. The interactive tasks were completed well and the discussions were used as evidence for Communication Essential Skills Wales. The videos were used afterwards in Moodle to reinforce the learning whilst in the classroom.

Learner Feedback

Like the videos.

Lesson Learnt

There is a lot to pack into one session and it could be beneficial to have this over two sessions if time is short. Knowledge of the Essential Skills Wales Commmunication criteria is required or the tutor needs to let the ESW tutor know so that they can come to the session to obtain the evidence of discussion.

There is also an opportunity to evidence the presentation element of Communication if the research is presented to the class. Again, this would need knowledge of the criteria or input from the ESW tutor.
