The little red hen

Little red hen - "Not I" grunted the pigOutline of the activity
As part of their literacy activities groups of children were asked to draw a picture of a scene from one of their shared stories. They had to select a character and include the defining speech for that character. Examples here are from “The Little Red Hen” and “The Gingerbread Man”

Skills Covered
The children were looking for key repetitive phrases and themes from their literacy text. They used their phrases as parts of their illustration to emphasise the characters they had chosen. Children used a variety of mouse skills – dragging, double clicking , right clicking. They also manipulated an icon driven menu and explored colour palettes and looked at the File/Save/Print commands. Future activities will build upon this.

Rationale
A fast activity, which reinforces the class literacy work. Key repeating phrases are selected and incorporated by the pupils into their scene. The combined pieces of work create a class book, which is used to support future literacy threads.

Result
Children considered key elements and characters within their story. Children discussed the text and the key moments in the story. They produced a series of linked images, which will be compiled into a class storybook. Several ICT skills were used, many for the first time. Frequent returns to this activity will reinforce both the ICT and literacy skills covered here.
