Sandwiches
Outline of the activity
Children in the class taste a variety of sandwiches which were bought from a local supermarket. They carry out a survey to decide which is the class’ favourite and the two most popular fillings were used to make the sandwiches for the Christmas Party.
Skills Covered
The children had to think about collecting and representing information in a survey and through graphical form. They had to input the information into the computer and they then had to interrogate their data and ask questions and discuss. Some children were able to print their work independently.
Rationale
The context of the task gave real meaning and lent itself to the use of a computer database to give an accurate pictorial representation of the children’s choices. The activity involved carrying out a survey and graphs could be produced for analysing results.
Result
The graphs were printed out showing the results of the survey in relation to the sandwich appearance, smell, taste, texture and overall favourite. Sandwiches were then made using the two most popular fillings as shown on the graphs and eaten at the Party.
